This is an update of the state of play on Japanese US Tairffs which i sent to you two days ago (Japan - wosening news on execution of US trade deal)
Japan's Chief Negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, has returned to Japan. There is no joint written statement.
Akazawa says the US has admitted that stacking tariffs on top of the 15% levy imposed by President Trump as a reciprocal tariff is an error on its behalf.
All stacking will be removed so 15% becomes the general tariff. But the US gave no commitment on when this would occur.
Akazawa has said that he expects the US to issue 2 new executive orders correcting the stacking error and another reducing automobile tariffs from 27.5% to 15%. Again there is no joint or US statement confirming either point.
So uncertainty remains. And damage has been done to US-Japan relations.
