How US pressure on Europe’s diesel reserves could affect prices and energy security.
The United States is reportedly asking France and Germany to release diesel from Europe’s emergency
reserves. Washington wants to lower fuel prices quickly. Europe wants to keep enough fuel in reserve in case
supplies are disrupted again.
US fuel prices are high and the midterm elections are approaching. Washington has therefore suggested that it
might limit diesel exports if Europe refuses to release its reserves.
The key questions are simple: would this lower prices, would it weaken Europe’s energy security, and what
would an export ban do to US oil production?
